Laser Doppler velocimetry is used to study the onset of mixed convection under the form of transverse or longitudinal rolls in a rectangular duct. Experiments are conducted for Rayleigh (Ra) and Reynolds (Re) numbers in the range 0.03 ⩽ Re ⩽ 3.3 and Ra ⩽ 4700, using water as working fluid.
