Online resources: Summary: Summary: While strides are being made in the research and development of environmentally acceptable and more sustainable alternative fuels—including efforts to reduce emissions of air pollutants associated with combustion processes from electric power generation and vehicular transportation—fossil fuel resources are limited and may soon be on the verge of depletion in the near future. Measuring the correlation between quality of life, energy consumption, and the efficient utilization of energy, the Handbook of Alternative Fuel Technologies, Second Edition thoroughly examines the science and technology of alternative fuels and their processing technologies. It focuses specifically on environmental, technoeconomic, and socioeconomic issues associated with the use of alternative energy sources, such as sustainability, applicable technologies, modes of utilization, and impacts on society. Written with research and development scientists and engineers in mind, the material in this handbook provides a detailed description and an assessment of available and feasible technologies, environmental health and safety issues, governmental regulations, and issues and agendas for R&D. It also includes alternative energy networks for production, distribution, and consumption. What’s New in This Edition: Contains several new chapters of emerging interest and updates various chapters throughout Includes coverage of coal gasification and liquefaction, hydrogen technology and safety, shale fuel by hydraulic fracturing, ethanol from lignocellulosics, biodiesel, algae fuels, and energy from waste products Covers statistics, current concerns, and future trends A single-volume complete reference, the Handbook of Alternative Fuel Technologies, Second Edition contains relevant information on chemistry, technology, and novel approaches, as well as scientific foundations for further enhancements and breakthroughs. In addition to its purposes as a handbook for practicing scientists and engineers, it can also be used as a textbook or as a reference book on fuel science and engineering, energy and environment, chemical process design, and energy and environmental policy.

Biography

Dr. Sunggyu Lee is an Ohio Eminent Scholar and a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. His specialty areas include alternative fuels and renewable energy, advanced and functional materials, as well as chemical reaction and process engineering. Dr. Lee has 34 U.S. patents and over 180 international patents in addition to more than 500 archival publications. He is the editor of the Encyclopedia of Chemical Processing published by Taylor & Francis. He earned his PhD from Case Western Reserve University and his BS and MS from Seoul National University.

Dr. James G. Speight, C CChem, FRSC, FCIC, FACS, earned his BSc and PhD from the University of Manchester, England. He also holds a DSc in the geological sciences (VINIGRI, St. Petersburg, Russia) and a PhD in petroleum engineering (Dubna International University, Moscow, Russia). Dr. Speight is the author of more than 50 books and Editor-in-Chief for a number of journals in the energy and environmental fields He was elected to the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1996 and awarded the Gold Medal of Honor that same year. He has also received the Scientists without Borders Medal of Honor of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2001, the academy also awarded Dr. Speight the Einstein Medal.

Sudarshan Loyalka was educated in Pilani, India (BE 1964) and Stanford University (MS 1965, PhD 1967). He is currently a Curators’ Professor of Nuclear Engineering in the Nuclear Science and Engineering Institute at the University of Missouri in Columbia. His educational and research interests are in transport theory, aerosol mechanics, the kinetic theory of gases, and neutron reactor physics and safety. A registered professional nuclear engineer in Missouri, he is a coauthor/coeditor of five books, and is a member of the editorial advisory boards of both Progress in Nuclear Energy and the Annals of Nuclear Energy.
